Hello lovelies and welcome. How’s all your Christmas prep going? Are you ready for the big day or do you still have loads to do? We are semi-there! If you’re yet to start then take a look at the following posts: Consumable gift ideas, stocking fillers and homemade gift ideas.

Other than Christmas shopping, we’ve been out and about quite a bit recently. If you’re local to the area then I definitely recommend heading into Bristol to check out all the festivities. We wrote about our recent trip to the Christmas market and We the Curious, here.

Today we’re sharing with you some of our photos from the Victorian Christmas weekend at the SS Great Britain in Bristol.

If you haven’t been to visit Brunel’s ship then you must. It’s a fantastic family day out and there’s so much to see and do. It’s great for a little ones as there’s a lot of “hands-on” activities as well.

Step Back in Time

The team at the SS Great Britain do a great job of transporting you back in time to the Victorian era. The whole dockyard is transformed to create a hustling, bustling 19th century dockside experience. Complete with decorations, snow and Victorian characters.

You may even meet Brunel himself. We did see Brunel but B got a bit star struck and shy!

The whole area is decorated and feels super festive. You’ll also hear traditional carols, sung in various locations around the ship. Someone enjoyed the snow!

Be sure to try your hand at some Victorian Christmas card making too. The cards are rather odd though!

Follow the Christmas Trail

Things we do at Christmas today were heavily influenced by the Victorians. It’s hard to imagine that before Queen Victoria, no one sent Christmas cards and Santa certainly wasn’t around!

To find out more about how the Victorians influenced the Christmas traditions we enjoy today, be sure to follow the festive trail at the SS Great Britain this Christmas. It’s on now until the end of December and gives you lots of information, from why we hang mistletoe, to what’s in Christmas pudding.

You can even try some traditional Christmas pudding and take a note of the recipe.

Become Brunel!

If you have little ones, it’s also worth picking up an Engineer’s satchel before you set off on your adventures.

You can pick them up in the gift shop and they are completely free to hire. They are packed with activities, accessories and things to do for kids. B loved wandering around the ship with his binoculars, torch and spy glass.

The downside of course is that you have to carry a satchel around but it isn’t heavy and the activities were worth it for keeping B entertained. We had to look out for certain objects and draw a picture while up on deck.
