Beyond Escapes – The Perfect Break for Families and Couples
Hey and welcome to the blog. We just got back from a weekend in Devon. This is an area of the country we love and we’ve been many times. It’s not far from Weston-super-Mare at all and there are so many wonderful places to explore. We were lucky to be invited to stay at Beyond Escapes Resort and Spa, luxury, self-catering lodges nestled in the Devon countryside. If you’re looking for a family getaway or perhaps a romantic date-weekend without the kids then take a read of our review below. As always, thoughts and opinions are honest and our own.
Beyond Escapes is located in South Devon, not far from Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. It’s the perfect base for exploring this area of Devon. From Weston-super-Mare, it takes us about an hour and a half. Not bad going for Friday after school too.
The site is well laid out with plenty of space for parking and exploring. There is an onsite restaurant if you don’t feel like cooking, and a well-stocked bar if you fancy a few drinks. They also provide handy breakfast and meat packs if you want to treat yourself to something yummy in your lodge.
One massive plus for most people is access to the free WiFi. And it really is free. None of this “only free for the first minute” lark. And even better, the speed was amazing. We managed to get 60MB download, meaning we could set B up on his iPad if he wanted to chill out and watch a bit of Netflix or YouTube.
You’re spoiled for choice at Beyond Escapes when it comes to comfy accommodation. We stayed in a two bedroom BE Lux Lodge with a hot tub. It really was home from home and pure luxury. There were nice little touches too which added to the luxurious feel. For example robes and slippers were provided for the hot tub, there was under floor heating and access to Sky sports channels.
Practical Kitchen and Dining
If you’re not planning on eating out then your kitchen diner has everything you need. It’s modern, stylish and has plenty of space for cooking a quick snack or a full, family-sized meal.
There is a full size fridge freezer, as well as a dishwasher to take care of all the washing up. We typically pack things like kitchen towels, sponges and washing up liquid. If you forget though, the lodges have everything you need. They even supply dishwasher tabs. We ate in both nights and stocked up at the local Morrisons. If you’re on a budget and don’t want to eat out every night then this is ideal.
For a two bedroom lodge, the bedrooms are a really great size. Both have en-suite bathrooms, as well as TVs. B particularly liked having his own bath and shower! The beds were comfy, we had plenty of pillows and we all slept well. This is always a bonus when you have kids isn’t it?!
The en-suite bathrooms are a good size and we loved the rainforest shower in the master bedroom bathroom. If you’ve forgotten toiletries then don’t worry, there are some provided in both rooms, and they smell divine.
There are also plenty of crisp white towels to use too. Ideal for saving space in the car when packing.
Hot Tub Fun
And now the highlight of the lodge – the hot tub! There was only one downside though – I’m 20 weeks pregnant so couldn’t go in! I had a quick Google and it seems like the jury is out when it comes to hot tub use in pregnancy. Some sites say strictly no and others seem more relaxed. I decided to err on the side of caution and watch from the decking. The boys had so much fun though. I guess this is how Mr D felt when he snapped his achilles and couldn’t join us in the hot tub on another holiday last year.
Look how much fun he’s having!
Great for Kids
If you are travelling with little ones, take advantage of the baby-friendly accommodation Beyond Escapes offer. And trust me, they have everything covered. You really don’t need to pack as if you’re away for six weeks!
For sleeping, they can provide the cot and linen, as well as night light, black out blinds, baby monitor and bed guards.
For eating, they will provide a high chair or booster seat, mini-cutlery and also a microwave and blender if needed. Perfect if you’re weaning.
They’ll even provide a changing mat and potty too if you don’t want to pack all that.
BE Wild Den Building Kits
B loves nothing more than making a den, fort or hideout. So when Beyond Escapes told us about their BE Wild den building kits, he was excited to try one out.
Now unfortunately the weather was not so kind to us on this trip. It didn’t rain, it absolutely tipped it down. So much so that we decided to use our den building kit inside! The spiral stairs make a great place to start your den. We used a couple of chairs to drape our camouflage over.
If you’re at Beyond Escapes and have better weather than us then I definitely recommend hiring one of the kits. They are free to hire for the day and have everything you need for building a proper den – ground sheet, tent pegs and mallet included!
BE Tempted Restaurant
Can’t be bothered to cook? Head to the BE Tempted Restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Their new autumn menu uses locally sourced ingredients, freshly caught fish and organic veg, delivered to the site daily. The creative, British menu changes with the seasons so you’re guaranteed something super fresh.
Onsite Spa and Gym
If you’re really looking for some rest and relaxation, make sure you use the on-site spa facilities. The BE You Spa and Gym are open to everyone aged 18 and over – so no kids I’m afraid. Which is fab if you’re having a child-free weekend! There’s plenty of space to relax in the spa, with heated loungers and stunning views across the Devon countryside. They also offer a wide range of spa treatments if you really want to treat yourself.
Are you planning a family break any time soon? Looking for a romantic getaway without the kids? If so, I’d definitely recommend taking a look at what Beyond Escapes have to offer. The site in Devon was great and well located for exploring the area. They also have a site coming in 2019 up in North Yorkshire – Pickering. We absolutely love this area and used to go up often to visit family and stop in Whitby. Perhaps this is one for us to add to our bucket list for 2019 – with the new baby in tow!
