5 Hidden Gems Near Devizes, Wiltshire
Hey hey, how’s your summer holidays going? Had enough already and looking to pack the littles back off to school?! We’ve been covering a load of hidden gems around the UK (West Sussex, Staffordshire and Lincolnshire) this summer and today we cover Wiltshire. Wiltshire isn’t too far from us in Weston-super-Mare and it’s a place I’d definitely like to explore more.
Our guest post is written by the lovely Rebecca at You Me Raising Three. Let’s find out what her hidden gems are!
Our Favourite Places In and Around Devizes, Wiltshire
Wiltshire, on the whole has a lot to offer. Market towns with tea rooms, beautiful countryside walks and some great places to visit with your family. Having spent most of my life in the Devizes area I’d like to think we know it well. Here are our 5 favourite places to visit!
On the outskirts of Trowbridge lies the village of Southwick where you’ll find Hope Nature Centre. Set in 15 acres of country park it’s home to many animals including; alpacas, donkeys, chickens, rabbits and pigs, you can purchase food for some of the animals when you arrive. We do this every time we visit, it’s a hit with the kids!
They have a lovely quaint tea room which provides delicious meals and snacks (and amazing homemade cake!), a small gift shop and several adventure playgrounds. This is without a doubt my favourite place. It’s perfect for the whole family. It doesn’t matter how often you go, it never gets boring.
Now, I love any farm shop to be honest, but there’s something about Planks that we just seem to love over every other we’ve been to. Not only do they sell divine cakes, but they have a lovely gift shop with some absolutely beautiful gifts in! Whilst this isn’t somewhere you could spend a whole day, if you’re looking for somewhere for a cuppa and a piece of cake this is definitely the place to go.
If you enjoy walks in the country side then head over to Avebury Henge and Stone Circles, Marlborough. Built during the Neolithic period, the henge survives as a circular bank and ditch which encircles an area that include some of Avebury Village. There’s a pub across from the some of the stones which is a great place for a refreshment after your walk!
Lacock Abbey is a lovely place to visit with children. The Abbey itself is stunning and you are able to visit some of the medieval rooms and cloister court! But it’s in a beautiful setting where you can go for a walk and take a picnic. During school holidays and seasonal periods they often have activities for children to take part in. The village is lovely and was used to film some of Downton Abbey, so if you’re visiting I’d recommend having a wander. There are a couple of pubs and tea rooms to stop at along the way!
Made up of 29 locks, Caen Hill Locks in Devizes are one of the longest in the country. Take a walk and see how many narrow boats you can spot along the way. There’s a welcome boat, The Admiral, where you can pick up activity sheets on pond dipping, local walk and information and stories about the locks.
The walk along the locks is lovely and we often take bikes and a picnic and gone off for the day. If you’re in the area on a Thursday then head into the town for Devizes’ market it has such a lovely atmosphere and there’s plenty to for the children to see!
Fun for the Whole Family
To some these might not seem like very exciting trips for the family, but they’re cheap days out where you can spend some quality time as a family whilst enjoying the countryside.
