Putting the Hotpoint Active Quattro HQ9B1L American Fridge Freezer to the Test

Let me start by saying that having your kitchen ripped out and updated is not a lot of fun. We are into week four of our kitchen and dining room project and I miss our routine. I hate to say it but I’m sick of eating out! When we got the oven all connected, I was beyond happy to be able to cook something decent.

As part of our kitchen project, one of my must-have items was a new fridge freezer. We had our trusty old fridge freezer for over ten years. Yep, it did well. But it was time to say goodbye and update it with something modern, larger and frost-free.

When AO.com asked us to review the Hotpoint Active Quattro HQ9B1L American Fridge Freezer, we were super excited to. To be honest it was exactly the style I’d been looking for. I wasn’t keen on having a fridge freezer that required plumbing. And this one doesn’t. I wasn’t fussed on the water dispenser as we always drink sparkling.

So let’s get to it, what we like, what we don’t like – our honest thoughts on this Hotpoint American Fridge Freezer.

What You Need to Know

Ok so let’s start with some of the key features. This fridge freezer is an American style, A+ rated, measuring in at the standard width of 90.9cm. It comes in a stainless steel effect which looks sleek and modern.

It has a whooping 589 litre capacity, which is essentially 31 bags of food. I don’t think we’ve ever done a shop that saw us bring home that many bags! For us, a family of three, there is plenty of room in both the fridge and freezer compartment.

One plus is that the freezer has three temperatures to choose from. Don’t want your ice cream rock hard? Set your freezer temp a little lower. It’s worth reading through the manual because this fridge freezer offers a lot of features. I’m not entirely sure what Freeze Care technology really means but it’s designed to handle temperature fluctuations in your freezer. Basically it’s aimed at keeping your food in tip-top condition. Who wouldn’t want that?

Another plus for me is that the fridge compartments are huge. There’s so much space to store your fresh produce. The fruit and veg drawers are spacious and ideal for keeping everything organized, and the door balconies provide loads of storage for bottles.

Getting to Know Your Fridge

The fridge compartment is ideal for families. For us, there has been plenty of space to store our weekly food shop.

You have plenty of door compartments to store bottles, sauces and jams too. You can also adjust the height of these to suit your needs.

Shelves are made of glass and can be adjusted. I find the setting for the top shelf is just about right for me, which basically means I can reach it!

One thing I didn’t realise the fridge did, was alarm me if I’d left the door open too long. And clearly I do leave the doors open way too long, and too often. Oops! If the doors (fridge or freezer) are kept open for two minutes, a quietish alarm sounds. At first I thought it was B messing around with a toy, and then I realised it was the fridge. I like this feature but for genuinely forgetting to close the doors. We find B can do this if he’s helped himself to something. However for day-to-day use, I tend to keep it open if I’m getting things in and out, perhaps when unloading shopping or making a snack.

You can mute the alarm by pressing any button on the control panel. Phew!

Frosty Features

OK so let’s take a look at the freezer. Again, it has two doors that open out to reveal plenty of freezer drawer storage. You can use the control panel to set your freezer temperature depending on use. I imagine we’d just keep the setting at the traditional freezer setting of minus 18 degrees.

The one thing I know I will love is the frost-free technology. I’ve never had a frost-free freezer so I’m excited about never having to defrost again – or, more realistically, chip away ice to get a pizza in.

Other Features to be Aware Of!

This American fridge freezer is packed with more features than you’ll know what to use. There is a holiday mode you can use if you’re away for a couple of weeks. The aim here is to save you energy if the appliance is not frequently used for a while.

There is a lock button. Handy if you have little ones helping themselves…

And, it comes with a handy Ice Maker.

Fill the trays with water and freeze. Once you have ice cubes, you simply twist the little handles and they all pop out into the tray. And repeat. It is super handy and we’ve made a batch of ice to enjoy in drinks during this heatwave.

Loving our Hotpoint Fridge Freezer

It is safe to say, we are loving the new fridge freezer. It fits perfectly in the metre gap in our kitchen. It looks sleek and stylish, and there’s plenty of room to store everything we need. If you’re considering one of the American style fridge freezers then yes, I’d definitely recommend taking a look at this one.
