tidy your home tips and tricks

How to Organize and Declutter Your Home This January

Hey there, how’s it going? Still full of the New Year resolution enthusiasm or feeling a major case of the January blues? I’m really trying to stay positive this January and generally declutter my whole life! If you’re struggling then take a read here because I share some of the things that help me.

One thing that often gets me down is the state of the house. It stays tidy for like two minutes and just ends up looking like a sh*t-tip again. This year I really want to get on top of organizing our home, keeping it clutter free and tidy. I know right, no easy task with a little one. I’ve been doing some reading on ways to get organized and I’m sharing some of the things that work for me, with you today.

I’m nice like that.

So let’s crack on.

how to declutter home and house

Tip 1 – Buy Less Crap

I know it sounds obvious but the first step for decluttering is to stop buying. If you feel tempted, ask yourself “do I really need this”?

Also, a trick I often use is to wait a day or two. If I’m still thinking about whatever then yes, I go and get it.

Tip 2 – Get Rid of Stuff

Yep, have a clear out and let go of all the stuff you really don’t need. Get rid of things that don’t bring you joy. Why keep them? I’m guilty of hoarding stuff so I really need to take this tip on board and have a proper clear out.

Tip 3 – Outsource

If you can afford to, outsource jobs like cleaning, window cleaning, decorating and gardening.

Tip 4 – Make Your Bed

It sounds silly but just make it. Pull the covers up, fluff the pillows. It takes like two seconds!

Tip 5 – Write a List

I love a list. Write down each room and what you want to achieve. Then break it down. Having smaller, manageable chunks to work on is much easier than committing to clearing out the whole kitchen!

Tip 6 – Do a Cupboard Audit

Every now and again (I would say month but I can’t commit to that ha) audit what you have in your kitchen cupboards. It’s amazing what you find stashed at the back of the biscuit cupboard!

Tip 7 – File It or Bin It

I blinking hate getting mail. The bill type mail I mean. Find somewhere to stash it and either sort it out regularly or file it straight away. That way you don’t end up with a huge pile of paper to sort through.

Tip 8 – Baskets and IKEA Boxes

I couldn’t live without baskets, storage boxes and IKEA boxes! They are just so super handy for stashing whatever junk you have floating about. Toys, wool, books – whatever!

  1. I’ve been doing this! After having my daughter it was like I took to nesting late. I have organised and cleared out the playroom, kitchen, little bedroom and utility room. I have gone wild with boxes and baskets. I even have a can holder in the fridge! ha ha! Feel so much better for it though #KCACOLS

  2. I retired in December so I finally have some time to do some decluttering and organising of stuff, I’m not sure where it all comes from. Although I have no intention of tackling the loft as I dread to think what’s up there ☺️ #KCACOLS

  3. I have so much stuff! Just before and after Christmas, I had big clearouts and I still have so much stuff I need to clear out! I love making lists, as does Olivia of things we need to sort out! Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next time
