Free Things to do on Maternity Leave RIGHT NOW!
Maternity leave is a funny thing. On the one hand you have time off work. A whole bloody year away from the daily 9-5. What else could be more appealing and exciting?! But then on the other hand you have a new baby, you have no flippin idea what you’re doing and you spend most days hanging out your ass, fueled by copious amounts of caffeine. And to top it all off, you have limited spare cash.
spending money on maternity
If you do spend any money, you feel a tiny bit guilty that you’re not really earning much. And if you don’t spend any money, you’re stuck in, watching Jeremy bloody Kyle on repeat.
So what’s a new parent to do with all this “time” but limited resources?
Today on the blog I share a few things that me and b did on our one year of maternity leave. These are trips out and things to do that didn’t break the bank!
We walked a lot. And not only is it free but it’s healthy too, physically and mentally.
we took advantage of our local Children’s Centres
Google your local children’s centres and take a look at what they have coming up. We have a few centres in Weston-super-Mare and I was spoilt for choice in terms of finding something to keep me and b busy. Note that this isn’t the case during the school holiday and the timetables typically change.
The Children’s Centres offered Stay and Play’s for under 1s and this really helped us get in to a routine and meet some new people.
We signed up to classes through the Children’s Centres
Keep an eye out for classes run at the centres too. We signed up for a baby massage class and it was not expensive at all. A few quid each session.
We saw friends
Having time out of work gave me extra time to see friends that I wouldn’t typically get to meet. Being around people I knew and family really helped with maternity loneliness too.
We window shopped
We did a lot of wandering around town and around supermarkets. Just getting out of the house and having a mooch helped with splitting up the day.
we visited parks
If the weather is nice, there is nothing better than getting a bit of fresh air. We are lucky in Weston as we have loads of parks to explore. There are plenty of pram-friendly places to walk in the area. Here are some of my favourite places for pram walks in North Somerset.
we Used Facetime. A lot!
If me and b were home, we’d often Face Time my sister and mum for a catch up. My sister was on maternity leave at the same time as me so it was nice to chat and see both the boys. We also took a lot of selfies!
we visited museums
Museums are typically free to enter. Check out what you have available locally as you’d probably be surprised! We really like the M Shed in Bristol and I’m looking forward to checking out the new museum in Weston!
we Ramped Up Hobbies!
If you’re feeling a bit bored at home then start a new hobby! I’ve crocheted for years and having b gave me a good excuse to start up again! I’m not sure b agrees in this photo.
If all else fails, start a blog! You don’t need any upfront cash to get started. Just start writing about what you know and love best. I started my blog using WordPress.com and it was super easy for a beginner blogger to get started.
Are you on maternity leave at the moment? What other activities would you add to the list?
