It is that time of year again – AUTUMN, or FALL, depending on where you are in the world 😉 I was recently in the States and goodness, they know how to do Autumn well! You can pick up all manner of pumpkins at the regular grocery store. And they even have pumpkin patches where you go and pick your pumpkin! A bit like picking a Christmas tree I imagine. I love it! I love the colours and the smells and I love the enthusiasm for this time of year.
Check out these beautiful pumpkins outside my colleagues home – absolutely lush! To put the big one into perspective, the medium sized one here is what I’d say is a large UK sized pumpkin!
Anyways, as you may know if you tune into the blog often, b and me like to have a bit of fun with our food now and again. Today we try out some super easy sandwiches for Halloween – mummy sandwiches to be precise!
All you need to make mummy sarnies is a round cookie cutter. Actually, when I think about it, you could simply cut the sandwich into long strips…that could work too. But if you have a round cookie cutter, use this to shape your sandwiches into circles.
I then cut slices of mature cheddar cheese and popped them on top of the bread. So an inside-out sandwich. I sliced the cheese unevenly to give the appearance of bandages. Now you could spread butter or cream cheese onto the bread, whatever your little ones like really 🙂
For eyes, literally anything goes. Tomatoes sliced, blueberries, raisins, tiny slices of carrot. Whatever you have, you can easily shape as eyes. For more foodie eye inspiration, check out this post here.
I actually used Cucamelons. These are little cucumbers, shaped as melons, which my mum grew in her garden this summer. As the name suggests, they kind of tasted a bit like cucumber and melon :/ I thought they tasted a bit odd. For a more in-depth look at these odd little things, take a read of this blog post here on Homestead and Prepper 🙂
For the mummy mouths, I simply chopped up some cucumber and used a regular knife to slice little teeth.
These scary sarnies didn’t take long but they were super cute and went down well with the little man.
I find it really hard to find Halloween themed food that isn’t junk food or loaded with sugar. Not that I’m a sugar saint or anything but I really want to come up with some healthier options for the boy. These sandwiches would be perfect for a kids party if you wanted an alternative to some of the junkier options.
