Fab Foto Fails and Blogging Imperfections

Blogging and Photography Fun

So I’m fairly new to this blogging lark – ten months in. I didn’t really get going until the new year. I started off  writing about the food creations I put together for little b. So for example, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt roast dinners and BB8 sandwiches.

I soon got bored of just writing about food though and I decided to branch out and document other bits and bobs. Things that I like, things that I don’t like, what we’ve been up to and where we have been. Some would say a modern day diary. I used to write diaries A LOT as a child. Some of the stuff in them literally makes me cringe when I read through bits. I should burn them haha. Poor b when he gets to re-read all this meaningful crap one day.

I wish I’d started blogging sooner!

So anyway, I guess the blog is an extension of my old diaries. I just wish I’d found it all sooner! I know a lot of bloggers say that too.

Since being a bit more serious about blogging, I’ve learned about link parties, tweet chats, the ins and outs of PR companies and I’ve learnt more than I ever knew about social media. Who knew that Twitter would become my favourite social media platform. I used to hate it and thought it was useless. Now I love it and summarise my favourite apps to manage it here.

I’ve also joined a lot of blogging groups on Facebook and they have been super useful for networking, advice and opportunities. There truly are some fab bloggers out there, willing to share so much information and experience. I hope I can start giving some of that back as I become more experienced too.

The photography learning curve

Anyways the point of this post is because there was some discussion in one of the groups about specific requirements from public relations companies in terms of what we should and shouldn’t do, as bloggers, when it comes to photography. And it got me thinking. It got me thinking because I am no photographer at all. I snap away and if I get a good photo then great. There are plenty that get deleted though and there are plenty I think look horrific. But the reasons I am not a good photographer are as follows:

  • I work pretty much full time and have a busy day job.
  • Then there is looking after my son and being the best mum I can be.
  • Then there are family and friends to keep in touch with and general life stuff.

And then comes blogging.

When my work is done, b is in bed, tea is cooked and the cats fed and watered. Blogging is my hobby. For all the reasons listed above I don’t have a lot of time to take a course in photography, and I don’t have a lot of time to overly worry about lighting and this and that and everything else that a professional photographer would worry about. I just snap away and capture life as it is, with all the imperfections and crappy bits.

Imperfections and crappy bits

And then all of this got me thinking…are you still with me haha…instead of feeling down and disheartened about my lack of photography skills, I will share them with you. Laugh, cry, mock – do whatever you fancy, here are my #FabFotoFails for all the world to see. Let’s see, we have the “phone in hand and still taking photos” fail. These are always good for a laugh. You just never know what you’re going to get. A fence, a bit of our water table and the back of the pram.

And then the double fail – finger over lens while dropping phone. These shots are awesome:

My favourite photo fails are these ones – the ones where I am trying to be all arty and clever and…well, see for yourself. They are sh*t.

The funniest for me are food fails. You see some fabulous stuff on Instagram and Pinterest – and then you get this in our house:

I mean honestly, WTF?! To be fair little man thought this was brilliant and ate the whole lot! But no. Just no – it looks awful and it’s not going on the blog!

And what the heck was I thinking here – a peeled banana and some chocolate pots. Exciting times in our house.

I’m happy to say that I’m not perfect, my life isn’t perfect, my blog isn’t perfect, my photos aren’t perfect and my grammar aint perfect either. And THAT’S OK because I know I am doing the best I’ve got. If anyone wants perfect then it won’t be here!

  1. I love the mashed potato cow! I am inspired to up my presentation for my nursery suppers now. And I also think the first fence pic is actually quite arty. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder… #fortheloveofBLOG

  2. I love the potato cow! its not a fail! the rest though…… oops! I\’m the same though, I have been trying to get to grips with a camera but quite frankly using my phone is a lot easier! and once I\’ve got the photo how on earth do you edit it?!? I\’m sure to be joining FabFotoFails on instagram soon! #fortheloveofBLOG

  3. Oh I\’m so with you on this – I really would like to take a photography course and invest in a fancy camera but until then I can only apologise for my blog photos 🙂 #fortheloveofBLOG

  4. Ha the cow is brilliant, you should definitely post them on your blog! Photography is a hard one because it does take so much time to either learn it properly or practice practice practice until you\’ve perfected it yourself. As you said though, you have your priorities and that\’s great, your photography looks good enough to an amateur like me!

  5. I don\’t \’do\’ Pinterest and if you are telling me that your cow is bad compared with those you see on there, I now know why I steer clear! I thought it was legend! I love that you\’re sharing your \’fails\’ and laughing about them, because isn\’t that what it\’s all about? Seeing the funny side of life and not getting too bogged down in the sincerity of it all. Keep going – you are fantastic 🙂 Alison x #fortheloveofblog

    • ah thank you Alison 🙂 it def makes sense to laugh at this type of stuff or we\’d go mad ey! Pinterest def makes ALL my fun food look completely pants haha!

  6. I LOVE this – most of my photos are of the blurry variety I just always seem to get the shaky shaky hands. I\’ve also been guilty of trying the arty shots and failing miserably! Defo going to join in on Insta. #fortheloveofBLOG

  7. The mashed potato cow is absolutely brilliant! I have to say that I really enjoy reading your blog, I find it really useful and interesting and can\’t wait to read more 🙂 I also love that you keep it real, as I feel that\’s what blogging is all about – rather than a perfect lifestyle that I definitely struggle to achieve!! I read the post about photography too and found it a little disheartening that PR companies would be so critical of bloggers\’ photos. Thank you for hosting #fortheloveofBLOG xx

  8. Hee hee – love that you\’re celebrating \’foto fails\’ – when you have so much on and the blog is a hobby it\’s unrealistic to expect professional looking photos and tbh I like the REAL look. I agree that I am growing to love Twitter and never expected that to be the case. I haven\’t found any facebook groups to join yet and would love some recommendations if poss. Fab post. #fortheloveofBLOG

  9. Oh I was laughing my head off reading this. How brilliant. I\’m a very hit and miss photographer, but i absolutely love design and styling so I\’m really trying ha ha! I have done every photo that you have done, but my forte has to be selfies of me that make me look like I have been embalmed or am a serial killer on the run!!! Definitely going to look out for you on instagram xxx

  10. Oh lovely – the mashed potato cow really needs some drops of gravy poo coming out of her arse! This is great – you should start a regular feature. My eldest was given a cheapy camera for her 3rd birthday to stop her pinching our phones to take photos – now, she likes to photograph me when I\’m getting out of the shower, breastfeeding, on the loo…..all really lovely stuff….! #KCACOLS

  11. I\’ve pretty much photographed anything that moves since our little one was born! 75% are rubbish but the decent ones make it worthwhile in the end! At least now there\’s no trip to the chemist to get 24 out if focus photos for a fiver!! #KCACOLS

  12. Haha looks like you took some of the photos off my phone!! I regularly try to get all arty and then look back and don\’t even know what the photo is meant to be of. Wish I understood filters as well! Maybe that would help….! #kcacols

  13. The sheep meal is genius!!!! So arty. Yep we all have those comedy photographic moments. Hilarious how you end up shooting the floor lots. Maybe it\’s because we don\’t have much time to spend on photography as we\’d like. SOmetimes I wonder if my three your old could be my photogapher. She\’s started to go through my INstagram and the otehr day I caught her \”heart-ing\” photos she liked! Your post made me smile and it\’s good to celebrate when things aren\’t perfect! x Sunita #KCACOLS

  14. The food cow is brilliant! I have to take loads of photos to get one that looks ok. Sometimes the fail photos are much more interesting than what we were going for in the first place lol.

  15. Lol oh I love this! I create dinners like the cow all the time…in my head they look exactly like something off Pinterest, in reality they\’d be lucky to end up on Buzzfeeds Pinterest Fail posts – this week i attempted a Hot Dog octupus..when you\’re 3 year old looks at you in confusion and says \”Whats this supposed to be, Mum?\” you know its a fail.

  16. I love this. Had me proper laughing and it\’s such a clever idea. People get so navel-gazing about taking good photos and I just don\’t have the time. I have a whole collection of photo fails (most of my photos, really) and will def join you on Instagram with them at some point. I really relate to all the reasons you don\’t have time to give a toss about photography as well! #chucklemums

  17. ha! so glad you wrote this. I have the same problem – i take a million photos to get a great one but then i find it impossible to delete the others ( especially if they are of arthur!). Id love to have the time to be perfect at blogging and everything else but im still learning really! Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday

  18. I think that your idea of sharing photo fails is such a great idea! I feel like I always have a hard time taking good pictures inside my house with all the different types of lighting. I\’ll have to join in on the Instagram hashtag. Thanks for sharing! #KCACOLS
