What to see and do in Whitby with Kids!
I have a very fond spot in my heart for beautiful Whitby. Maybe it’s because I grew up interested in all things gothic and dark, or maybe it’s because Mr d and I have spent many a lovely holiday there. I love the quaint, cobbled streets; I love the pubs overlooking the harbour; I love the haunting Abbey and I love the steps all the way to the top.
Mr d and I spent a week in “Steps Cottage” when we were younger. It is supposed to be haunted too (we only read this after booking lol!). I must admit, I didn’t venture up to the third floor! It really was right on the steps:
We’ve also camped near Whitby and we’ve spent a number of holidays in some self-catering cottages on the west cliff side of Whitby. These were ideal when little b was a bubba.
Why Whitby?
So why do I enjoy Whitby so much and why is it fab for a day out with a little one?!
Whitby is family friendly and there are lots of places to venture into. You have loads of pubs, restaurants and places to eat with a little one. We have a favourite pub that overlooks the harbour. We popped little man on my knee and he was really good. It was at this moment though when I felt his head and thought “brilliant, he has a high temp” – welcome to holiday hell take two (more to come on holiday hell take 1 another time haha).
Lots of places to grab a bite!
Don’t fancy eating in, grab some fish and chips to take away! In reality we did this and I stupidly ordered baked beans and mushy peas to feed B…instead I ended up trying to carry them and push the pram and fend off charging seagulls…urgh, it was all a bit of a faff! And b was in his “I need to nap still but if I’m not in my cot, then I won’t” phase. Grr. So cue massive melt down and tantrums. Look at his face here! And look at my face, trying to keep that level of calm before I just burst into tears and say stuff it! And randomly there is a guy attached to my right shoulder. Hmm.
Seaside Fun!
You have the beach. If it’s nice weather, then the beach is ideal. We never seem to head to the beach at Whitby. Maybe because we have the beach all year in Weston so it’s less of a novelty.
Boats. Whitby sits on the mouth of the river Esk. You can spend a good while watching the boats come and go. Perfect for transport mad toddlers. You can take a trip out on some of the boats. I’ve never been fussed to be honest…not a huge boat fan. I prefer the steam trains at Pickering!
Arcades. As with any seaside town, you get the arcades. B loves just looking around them and sitting in the little rides. Unfortunately whenever we seem to go to the arcades, these rides are “broken”. Sigh.
So there, a very quick round up of fun things to do with a little one in Whitby. Just down the road, well about 40 minutes, is the seaside town of Scarborough. Read my tips and trick here, as well as our write up of Guisborough Forest –about 45 minutes west of Whitby 🙂

I would love to go to Whitby, it looks really good! It\’s not too far away from me (I\’m in Grimsby) so I think I could survive the family car journey.
#ABrandNewDay
the Dracula town:)) nice photos! #city tripping
love the gothicness hehe
I haven\’t been to Whitby in years, I need to go back someday. There is so much for families to do, although such a shame that your little one wasn\’t feeling well. I would be nervous about staying in a haunted house though! 🙂 Thanks for linking up to #Whatevertheweather x
yes I did feel a bit funny being in the cottage! x
I\’ve never been to Whitby…yet… seeing as my hubby is from Yorkshire I know we will and now I know what to do. Hope your little man felt better soon. That pic with the man on your shoulder is so random! Thanks for linking #citytripping

Whitby us somewhere i\’d love to go but still haven\’t me it to – that Yorkshire Coast is definitely on my list. I have a friend who loves it here and visits a couple of times a year so it\’s always tempted me. Hopefully without the temperatures though! #citytripping
