This week is “family week” at b’s nursery and I was invited to go in and work with the children again. I’ve been in a couple of times before so I knew what to expect – madness and mayhem haha! National Family Week is an annual event in the UK which celebrates family life, encouraging families to spend more time together. Busy Bess ran different activities through the week, with Friday being “Food Friday”. We invited parents to the nursery to come and spend time with their child or children, doing a range of activities. Today it was all about fun food, themed around nature.
Friday is my only week day off so it was a mad dash this morning to make sure I had everything packed. I had some time to set things up for the pre-schoolers and I mocked up a spider and caterpillar sandwich to show them what they could make. You can see I had a few cookie cutters on hand to make large “spider” bodies 🙂
We used bread, ham or hummus for our sandwiches and then a selection of salad veggies to make legs, antenna, heads and whatnot. I love the colours!
And the kids did amazing! Look at their creations! The hummus wasn’t a huge hit tbh! B loves it but maybe it’s an acquired taste :-/ Or maybe it’s because I eat it all the time?!
One of the things I like to demonstrate to the carers and any parents is how easy it is to make things like this. You really don’t have to be super creative or artistic to make cute critters. The kids loved making spiders and the caterpillars inspired some of the children to try celery “legs” 🙂
I love going in and working with the children because it is a billion miles away from what I do day to day. I work for a software company and I am mostly office based. It’s nice to do something completely different once in a while but honestly, I don’t know how the carers do it! There is a lot to be said for my quiet office!
