Welcome to me and b! If you’ve been reading some of the fun food posts then you know that I don’t have a lot of time to create art masterpieces in the kitchen. I promise that even this Thomas the Tank Engine Harold Sandwich didn’t take long!

Mostly I cheat and use cookie cutters to make simple shapes out of anything flat – cucumber, cheese, ham, bread – anything you can think of that can be cut with a cookie cutter! You can still use good quality ham and cheese too. I typically go for cheddar slices but I find Gouda and Edam usually work better. Mature cheddar can sometimes crumble.

The best food for cookie cutting is, in my opinion, cucumber! Today I will show you some of the things you can make in literally minutes. You could easily substitute with some cooked carrot or courgette slices. The idea is to try and entice your little one to try new veggies and enjoy them!

Below are some simple ideas you can try – flowers, stars and really simple food presentation using silicon cupcake cases. You can pick these up in any supermarket or discount shop. I find these transform any meal from boring to super exciting!

Once you have your “flowers”, you can add pepper strips to make the stalks. Celery or carrot sticks work well too. Oh and a random skull food pick. I need to buy some new picks! Basically a cocktail stick with something fun on the end. Obviously be careful if your child has a tendency to want to stab themselves/people/pets with these sticks. You probably want to sit with them if it is their first time using the picks. B is now three and has used food picks for a good 18 months now.

Next, let’s add some bugs. These are super easy. Grab a black icing pen and draw on your “eyes”. You can pick up icing pens in any supermarket for a few quid. They aren’t expensive and they last a while.

And there you have it – flowers, some bugs and a little cup of cucumber and pepper (the bits I didn’t use as I try not to waste anything). If you want to add extra you could pop in a bit of cheese and some crackers 🙂
